# Set up each product

> See which products use an option set, make the design change with each Shopify variant, and copy that setup from one product to another.

An option set asks your customers the same questions on every product it is attached to. But your products are not all the same. A t-shirt comes in five colours. A canvas comes in three sizes. The **Config product** tab is where you set up each product on its own.

Open your option set and click **Config product**. It sits beside **Edit option**, above the option you are editing.

![The option set editor's middle card with the Config product tab open, showing No products assigned yet, a short explanation, and the Assign products button outlined.](https://mintcdn.com/nexlify/RY21J9xpbvJGa3D_/images/optionsets/config-product-empty.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=RY21J9xpbvJGa3D_\&q=85\&s=2e524082965692fc678879c5c9e46526)

The Config product tab, before any product is attached.

If you see **No products assigned yet**, click **Assign products** and tick the products that should use this option set. [Assign products and go live](https://docs.customei.com/go-live/publish-and-assign.md) walks through that dialog.

## Your products

Once products are attached, the top of the tab lists them under **Assigned products**, with a count beside the title.

![The Config product tab listing assigned products with thumbnails and status labels, the first product selected, and its Variant personalization settings below.](https://mintcdn.com/nexlify/RY21J9xpbvJGa3D_/images/optionsets/config-product-tab.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=RY21J9xpbvJGa3D_\&q=85\&s=41730be0e1060d4ac4751755909e8466)

The assigned products, and the setup of the one you picked underneath.

Each row shows the product's picture, its name, and up to two labels:

| Label | What it tells you |
| - | - |
| **Published**, **Needs publishing** or **Not live yet** | Whether shoppers see your latest work on this product. The same labels as on the [Products page](https://docs.customei.com/go-live/publish-and-assign.md#reading-the-status). |
| **+1 option set**, **+2 option sets** … | This product also uses other option sets. Click the label to see their names. Each name opens that option set in a new tab. |

Click a row to pick that product. Its setup appears under the list.

Need more products? Click **Assign products** at the top right of the list.

### Products from more than one store

If you run several Shopify stores on one Customei account, one option set can be attached to products in all of them. When that happens, the list is split by store. Your current store comes first, and each store's name sits above its products.

## Open a product's own page

Point at a product in the list and a small gear button appears at the end of the row. This is **Product settings**. Click it to open that product's page in a new tab. Your option set stays open where you left it.

![A product row in the Assigned products list with the gear-shaped Product settings button outlined at the end of the row.](https://mintcdn.com/nexlify/ArrkS_e8oCUW6Ct1/images/optionsets/product-settings-button.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=ArrkS_e8oCUW6Ct1\&q=85\&s=b891f5937478e2a9096f020182c31b47)

The Product settings button appears when you point at a row.

The product page is where you reorder or remove option sets on that product and turn the live preview on or off. See [The product page](#the-product-page) below.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The gear is greyed out for a product in another store. Open that store's Shopify admin and go to the product from there.

## Make the design change with each variant

Your Shopify variants are the choices Shopify already asks about, like **Color** and **Size**. **Variant personalization** lets each variant change the design. For example:

* A shopper picks the **Black** t-shirt, and the design switches to a version with white text.
* A shopper picks **Large**, and a bigger frame appears around the photo.
* A shopper picks **Heather Olive**, and the mockup photo behind the design changes to an olive shirt.

You set this up in two steps: first choose *what* changes, then choose *how* it changes for each variant.

![The Variant personalization section showing a variant count, the Copy from product button, Template connections with a Wizard link, a Group by control, and a table of variants grouped by Color.](https://mintcdn.com/nexlify/ArrkS_e8oCUW6Ct1/images/optionsets/variant-personalization.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=ArrkS_e8oCUW6Ct1\&q=85\&s=607ecba35a9e847bd17f292790079c25)

Variant personalization: what changes at the top, each variant's setting underneath.

### Step 1. Choose what changes

Under **Template connections**, click **Add connection** and pick what a variant should change. Once you have one, the button reads **Add another connection**. Use one of these three:

| Connection | What a variant does with it |
| - | - |
| **Switch design template** | Swaps the whole design for another one. Good for portrait and landscape versions of the same canvas. |
| **Group visibility** | Shows one group of layers and hides the rest. Good for a frame or border that only some sizes get. |
| **Dynamic image** | Puts a different picture into one image layer. |

> [!WARNING]
>
> The list offers more connections than these three, because it is the same list a choice option uses. On your store, a variant only drives **Switch design template**, **Group visibility** and **Dynamic image**. Anything else you add here does nothing for shoppers.

[Connect options to your design](https://docs.customei.com/optionsets/connect-to-a-template.md) explains each connection in more detail.

The layers and groups you can pick come from the design template behind this option set. If the product has no design template yet, you will see a **Reference template** box first. Pick any template there to borrow its layers and groups. **Switch design template** works without one.

### Step 2. Set it for each variant

The table under the connections lists every variant of the product. Each row has a small icon for each connection. Click the icon to set what that variant does, for example which group it shows.

A product with lots of variants gets long fast, so the table groups them for you. Use **Group by** to choose how:

* **Group by Color** puts all the sizes of each colour together.
* **Group by Size** does the opposite.
* **Don't group** shows one flat list.

Groups start closed. Click a group to open it and see its variants.

A group row has the icons too. Set one there and every variant in that group gets the same setting. Set **Brown** once and all five Brown sizes follow. Then open the group to change just one size if you need to.

> [!TIP]
>
> To fill many variants in one go, click **Wizard** next to *Template connections*. It opens every variant in one big grid, one column per connection, so you can type straight down a column.

### Products with only one variant

Variant personalization needs at least two variants. A product with one variant, or none, shows a short note instead of the settings. There is nothing to set up, and nothing is wrong.

### It is saved on the product

This setup belongs to the product, not to the option set. You can reach it from any option set the product uses, and it is the same setup each time.

If the product also uses other option sets, a note above the settings names them: *Also assigned to …*. Anything you change here changes there too.

## Copy the setup from another product

Most stores sell the same variants again and again. Every mug comes in 11oz and 15oz. Every t-shirt comes in the same five colours. Set up one product, then copy it to the rest.

**1. Pick the product that needs the setup**

Click it in the **Assigned products** list.

**2. Click Copy from product**

You'll find it at the top right of *Variant personalization*, beside the variant count.

**3. Pick the product to copy from**

Search by name if your list is long. The products you changed most recently are at the top.

**4. Read the line at the bottom, then click Copy**

It tells you what the copy will do before anything changes.

![The Copy from product dialog with a search box, a list of products with one selected, a Matching variants count at the bottom, and Cancel and Copy buttons.](https://mintcdn.com/nexlify/RY21J9xpbvJGa3D_/images/optionsets/copy-from-product.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=RY21J9xpbvJGa3D_\&q=85\&s=a62838ecb80e392bca8b228bdc80273e)

Copy from product, with a product picked and the matching variants counted.

Customei matches variants by their choices, not by their position. **Black / Large** on one shirt gets the setting of **Black / Large** on the other, even if the two products list their variants in a different order.

The line at the bottom of the dialog says one of three things:

| Message | What happens when you click Copy |
| - | - |
| **Matching variants: 8/10** | 8 of this product's 10 variants get the other product's settings. The other 2 are left empty for you to fill in. |
| **No variants match, so only the template connections are copied.** | You get the list of *what changes*. You set each variant yourself. |
| ***Product* has no variant personalization to copy.** | Nothing to copy. The **Copy** button stays off. |

> [!WARNING]
>
> Copying **replaces** the setup this product already has. It does not add to it.

The copy is not saved yet. Look it over, then click **Save** in the bar at the top of the page to keep it. Click **Discard** to throw it away.

You can copy from any product in the same store that has variant personalization, even one on a different option set.

## Save your changes

Nothing on this tab saves by itself. When you change something, the **Unsaved changes** bar appears at the top of the page. One **Save** keeps everything: your option changes and every product you set up on this tab. **Discard** throws it all away.

You can move between products before you save. Your changes on each one wait for you.

When the setup is right, [publish the option set](https://docs.customei.com/go-live/publish-and-assign.md#step-2-publish) so shoppers see it.

## The product page

The **Product settings** gear opens this page. You can also get there from Shopify itself: open the product in your Shopify admin, click **More actions** at the top, then **View personalization in Customei**.

![A product page in Customei with an Option sets card listing the attached option set, a Variant personalization card below it, and a Preview card on the right with the Live preview switch outlined.](https://mintcdn.com/nexlify/ArrkS_e8oCUW6Ct1/images/optionsets/product-page.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=ArrkS_e8oCUW6Ct1\&q=85\&s=2e3dae3ae690d6e62be63d856b8ff5b8)

The product page: option sets and variant personalization on the left, a working preview on the right.

### Order and remove option sets

A product can use more than one option set. The **Option sets** card lists them in the order shoppers see their questions.

* Drag the handle on the left of a row to move it up or down.
* Click the bin icon to take that option set off this product.
* Click **Add option set** to attach another one.

### Live preview

The **Live preview** switch at the top of the *Preview* card decides whether shoppers see their design change as they make their choices. Leave it on unless you have a reason not to.

### The preview

The *Preview* card shows the product the way a shopper meets it. Your design sits on the mockup, with the product's variant choices and your option set's questions underneath. Pick a different colour or size and the design changes the way you set it up in *Variant personalization*.

The preview follows your changes before you save them, so you can try a setup and check it right there. It works even if the product has never been published.

The variant personalization card on this page is the same one you see on the **Config product** tab. Change it in either place. **Copy from product** is only on the **Config product** tab.

Changes here wait for the **Save** bar too. Publish afterwards so shoppers see them.
